Valentine’s Day – The last day of temptation that started with Halloween

Valentine’s Day is coming up fast and for many it’s the last in a long line of special occasions marked by treats and sweets and pastries galore. (And for those who celebrate it, February 14 is also Chinese New Year, which means more food!)

As luck would have it, February is also Heart Health Month so the Heart & Stroke Foundation is putting extra effort into promoting higher intake of vegetables, fruits, omega-3 rich fish and whole grains that are good for you heart.

If you’re looking at what you ate during the Super Bowl just last weekend and thinking you really don’t need another box of chocolates or candy, here are some healthier, but no less thoughtful, food gift ideas you can drop hints about getting or giving:

Heart-shaped pancakes. Place a heart-shaped cookie cutter onto your griddle and pour the batter into it. Garnish with hulled, halved fresh strawberries for extra flare and serve it up! Strawberries are loaded with vitamin C and a phytochemical called ellagic acid which is linked to a lower risk of heart disease.

Jello Hearts. Make strawberry or raspberry jello the night before and cut using your heart-shaped cookie cutter again. Use sugar-free jello to save even more calories.

Chocolate Fondue for Two. Melt high quality dark chocolate in a double boiler whisking in a touch of cream or evaporated milk. While it’s melting, cut up cubes of pineapple, kiwi, apple, pear and passion fruit. Dark chocolate has been linked to lower blood pressure and the fruit will boost your fibre and vitamin intake.
